Ghana Permaculture Institute (GPI) envisage creating a suitable environment for the rural poor. It uses the permaculture ethics of earth care, people care and fair share in its sustainable project implementation. GPI target women, children, youths and farmers who are below the poverty belt in Ghana and other west Africa countries.
With the support of BMZ and some organizations and individuals, SONED and GPI was able to developed, implemented and achieved a successful three and half year project on Poverty Reduction and Economic Development in Ghana and West Africa from 2016 to mid 2018.
GPI and SONED has been able to impact over 8000 farmers with the knowledge of permaculture design system. Due to this huge number and their inability to attain frequently, the permaculture practical knowledge from the GPI center located in Techiman, Brong Ahafo region due to the long distance and high cost involved, and many challenges in agriculture activities which is their main source of livelihood. There has been an urgent need to create another learning center in the country. Specifically, in the northern region of Ghana, where about 70% of these members are located.
Aside attaining the land and putting up all the permaculture field activities in this center, capacity building and livelihood empowerment programs and training will be organize for youths and women and some income generating activities such as mushroom cultivation, sewing, cosmetics etc. Moreover, 9 schools within Brong Ahafo and Northern region will be supported with the necessary knowledge and equipment in creating a permaculture garden which can be use to support their school feeding programs. Clubs will also be organized in the selected schools which, they will have a selected day within the week to learn the permaculture system in their basic circle.
