Support the use of biofuels in Senegal!

A project from Greening Africa Together/Alle Hand in Hand, e.V.
in Kouram, Senegal

This working group wants to improve the handling of the existing biodigesters and their byproducts (fertilizer) and install new equipment to enable the villagers to produce carbonized briquettes, which can be used for cooking or as an income source.

About this project

Greening Africa Together intervenes in different countries in Africa. This project is aimed to develop in Kouram, Senegal. Every year students from diverse backgrounds travel to this village to support sustainable projects that focus on improving the life of people in Kouram.
Kouram is located at the border to Gambia and has 1200 inhabitants living in 78 households. Their main income activity is agriculture. Kouram has been a partner village of Greening Africa Together since 2015 during which the villagers could voice their most important needs to the network.  Because of this a group has been working on the replacement of the current fuels used for cooking, an activity mainly performed by women in the village.

Cooking with solid fuels (such as wood) in poorly ventilated areas impose serious health risks for all involved individuals and furthermore contribute to several ecological issues such as deforestation and desertification. The organic fuels group focuses on minimizing the ecological impact related to cooking and on protecting the health of the villagers by replacing the currently used fuels with sustainable alternatives. In this year, we want to improve the handling of the existing biodigesters and their byproducts (fertilizer) and install new equipment to enable the villagers to use agricultural waste to produce carbonized briquettes, which can be used for cooking or as an additional income source.
