SOLAR WELL for ABIRIBA, Nigeria
Water is, in addition to air, the most important resource people need to survive. Unfortunately, water scarcity prevails in many regions of the world. According to the United Nations, about 800 million people do not have access to clean drinking water. About 3.4 million people die annually from the consequences of unclean water. This applies especially to children under 5 years of age: every 20 seconds a child dies of a disease caused by unclean water.
In the developing countries south of the Sahara, over 45% of the population have no access to clean drinking water. Millions of women and children spend several hours every day searching for water. They are often exposed to violence and sexual abuse. Through drought and poor water quality more people die than through wars and violence.
Water is Life!
Access to clean drinking water not only saves lives and protects against sexual abuse on the arduous search for water. It is also the basis for development: more than 400 million schooldays are missed annually by diseases related to unclean drinking water. Access to clean drinking water can therefore increase the education of many people and enable economic development.
