Malmesbury is a South-African town about 65 kilometres north of Cape Town and principally a rich place. There are industries, good roads and people who live in villas.
But there are its townships too, suburban areas, founded during the Apartheid era, separated along ethnic lines. Around 25.500 out of 36.000 inhabitants live in one of the townships.
The townships are dominated by poverty and the poorest ward of Malmesbury is Ilinge Lethu shaped by black Xhosa-culture. The bad living circumstances of many people in shanty towns, lack of prospects and lack of education lead to a big spread of drug abuse, violence and illnesses such as HIV and Tuberculosis.
One of the key problems is food security. Malnutrition is a tremendous problem by itself. But there are following phenomena: Alcoholism in children occurs where parents try to sedate their hungry children. Ill people can’t take their medication without something in their stomach.
One of many possible and several existing approaches is Food Bank Malmesbury.
Food Bank Malmesbury is an organisation fighting malnutrition.
Every day we dish out food: to people who were diagnosed with malnutrition by the local clinic, and to children who could not get one of the rare places in a day-care-centre. We provide a warm meal during noontime as well as food parcels consisting of bread or similar food donations.
The organisation is driven by committed citizens of the townships who are determined to improve the living circumstances of their fellow men and women.
Our cooks as well as the four members of our Management Committee responsible for all administrative processes and decision making, work unsalaried.
Currently we are providing food for 90 people a day. We are financially sorted for about four months. But we want to make Food Bank Malmesbury an enduring project. Please help us by your donation! Contribute to the fight against malnutrition and insufficient living circumstances!
