Post-Covid Recovery by strengthening livelihood capabilities of local dairy farmers

Valsad and Anand District, Gujarat, India

Partner: Deutsche Welthungerhilfe e. V. (WHH), Tribhuvan Das Foundation (TDF - local partner) – om collaboration with AMUL, Asia’s 8th largest dairy, and SAP India

The second wave of Covid not only brought India a sad record of more than 400,000 deaths, but also almost wiped out the livelihoods of millions of people through forced closings and a slowdown in the economy, and at the same time had a negative impact on the food situation. More than a million farmers in the two districts in Gujarat State deliver their products to the cooperative, which thus secures their basic income. However, there is a risk that if the source of income is not diversified, this business model will not allow farmers to survive the aftermath of the pandemic.

The project aims to build resilient and sustainable rural businesses in project regions to ensure rapid recovery from COVID and better prepare communities to fight future waves of the pandemic. To meet this need, it is planned to develop the entrepreneurial skills of members of AMUL's community-based organizations in the areas of production, quality improvement and marketing through training. At the same time, a program for entrepreneurs in agriculture and related sectors is to be set up. The competency development of the individual entrepreneurs and the community-based organizations (especially those under the leadership of young people and women) follows a "life cycle approach" that accompanies the participants from the generation of ideas with the aim of increasing their income and providing more employment opportunities at the project locations create.

The methodology of competence development and company acceleration is prototyped and tested by the Green College Initiative of the WHH (https://welthungerhilfeindia.org/initiative/green-colleges-initiative/) and is easily scalable in other regions. The entire project is scheduled to run for three years.
The following milestones are foreseen for the project:  ·         A “Green College” is established as a training institute for agriculture and the related sector ·         900 young people will be trained, who will also have an additional annual income as a result ·         In addition, 50 young people with high potential are being trained as part of a fast-track business acceleration program Professional trainers and the pedagogical approaches will be further developed and standardized for the professions in the sector
