Über das Projekt

Kibera is the biggest slum settlement in sub Saharan Africa with more than 70% of its over 500,000 inhabitants being products of rural urban immigration. Polycom Development project using its crowd data sourcing platform the Talking Boxes have managed to analyse issues that lead to the high number in school drop out and have come up with programs to help keep girls in school. Polycom have adapted the use of sports in mobilizing girls to discuss issues affecting them. The play ground act as a safe space where they can meet, play and share. Every evening a group of girls report to the pitch to play, just before the coaching are talks, mostly on how they should make informed decisions especially as far as their bodies are concerned and to make education their top most agenda.
Volleyball sports is used, this is because of its uniqueness at the grassroots as well as the fact that it does not require a big space but a very small space to play.
Rebecca 17 years old joined the team in 205, she was giving up, nobody was supporting her through her education because all her sisters had dropped out of school at primary level, they did not understand that it is possible for any girl in that family to go beyond primary education. AFter attending several training sessions, listening to stories from other girls and invited speakers, she openly declared that she is not falling in love until she is done with her education. She is still going strong and shares about her story every now and then, making her strong and focused. Through our project we are able to provide her with her educational material and basic needs like sanitary pads and panties, her role is only to concentrate in her education. Rebecca is not alone, several girls who have been at the brick or dropping out of school or already dropped out of schools after participating in our programs have been able to go back to school and study. We recruit and work with 450 every school term, that is 30 in every one of the 15 partner schools. We use sports to fighting manipulation and violence among young girls living in the slums, by listening to their voices through crowd data sourcing, working with communities and other stakeholders to make the places safe and strengthening capacities of these girls to be able manage their lives on their own, building trust in them by the teachers, parents and other actors in their lives.
