Kondh tribals villages in Vishakapatnam district, Andhrapradesh, India are very remote and do not have even primary schools. Some of the villages do not even have a road connection. For the children, government started boarding schools (ashram school), which admits the children from 7 years of age. As the children do not have exposure to education till 7 years of age, it will be difficult for them to adjust in the residential school and eventually most of the children drop out of the school.
The play schools are meant to fill the gap by providing the basic education through songs and games in a fun way. The teachers in the play schools are from the same community so that children can communicate in their local "kondh" language.
The schools are started by PS Ajay Kumar, who has been working with the tribals in the region for land rights and other developmental issues for the tribals.
