This is an ethnographic documentary project in the effort to advocate for Nepali women and girls trapped within the sex trafficking industry.

I am aspiring to launch an ethnographic documentary project to research and advocate for the trafficked girls and women of Nepal that are forced into prostitution. Thousands of Nepali girls and women fall victim to circumstances that lead them to be sexually exploited and the resources to help them are few in number.

I want to spend a year in Kathmandu, beginning in August, doing anthropological research through the use of digital visual media in collaboration with a local media arts collective. This way, I will be able to network with local individuals, media artists, and organizations that wish to assist in the obtainment of information, assist with production, or voice their perspectives on the matter. This will help make the project a communal effort, thus further ensuring the potential impact this project will have.

The anthropological approach will allow in- depth investigation as to the cultural context in which the trafficking of women takes place and how it factors into the frequency of sexual exploitation and how the core value systems factor into efforts to reduce it. The use of digital media will create a more efficient avenue in which to collect visual data as well as to distribute the documentary and photographs beyond Nepali borders and into the international sector. Association with the media arts collective will create a starting point in which to bring the project into the public sector, thus further increasing awareness and advocacy/ fund raising efforts for trafficked Nepali throughout the stages of the project. I plan to show the documentary and photographic collection at public screenings, through the media collective, during the progressive and final stages to encourage feedback and further involvement.

Upon the completion of the documentary, I will distribute copies to local activists and organizations that wish to use it for fund raising against female trafficking in Nepal. Also, I will distribute clips and photographs to social networks that have similar missions in regards to women's rights, human trafficking, or advocacy through the use of media. This will hopefully create a ripple effect in community and government efforts to put an end to the sexual exploitation of Nepali women and girls in the passing along of this documentary and photographic collection.
