    Über das Projekt

The CasaSito Rainwater Catchment Tanks Construction Program is intended to improve domestic water supplies for rural villagers in Guatemala. In many areas of Guatemala local surface water is scarce and polluted, and local springs are drying up under the combined effects of deforestation and over usage. As a result the families are forced to walk to fetch water every day up to several kilometers, often at night, and to wait up to several hours at the filling holes, and then to carry heavy containers over steep terrain. Besides a lack of clean drinking water, water for bathing is greatly restricted, especially in the dry season, causing skin and other health problems.

Rainwater catchment tanks, using ferro-cement technology, are starting to catch on as a solution to some of these problems. They are low-tech, medium-cost, low-maintenance, and require no power to operate. Each tank can hold 5,000 liters of water or more, which stores a 2-3 month supply of water for an average family. In Guatemala the rainy season is about 6 months long, so the family will have an at-home water supply for 8 to 9 months of the year.

The construction program is targeted at groups who provide the funds and most of the manpower. Usually a local mason is contracted to help in the construction, and the target families provide help in carrying materials and some food. CasaSito helps with logistics, communication, and planning. We target communities where we are already working: in Momostenango, Totonicapán; Cobán, Alta Verapaz; and Ixcán, Quiché.

Depend on geography, the family situation, and the means of the donor group, CasaSito strives to provide the solution that best fits the community’s needs and the preferences of the donors. We have identified a range of options for donor groups to consider. The costs are $450 - $850, include materials, paid labor, and material delivery to the community.
