Dear Intiwawa community,

thanks to your fantastic support we were able to carry out our activities! See below some of the highlights of  the previous weeks.

Nutritional Health Project
In August, we have restarted our Nutritional Health Project with our nutritionist, who conducted anemia tests & malnutrition diagnosis for 65 Intiwawa children & their siblings. The results of these tests show that around 1/3 of the children tested have light to moderate anemia, and 1/3 have nutritional problems resulting in being either overweight or underweight, or under the normal height for their age. Following these preliminary results, we are working together with the families, our cook, nutritionist and health volunteer, with the goal of improving the nutritional problems diagnosed in our Intiwawa community by the end of the year.

Vocational Orientation Program
Our High School students have started our pilot vocational orientation program to guide them through their further studies and next phase of their life after they finish school. During their first outing, our students participated in a workshop about career options and a visit of a higher education institute here in Arequipa, before having a guided tour of the historical center.

Integral Sex Education
As part of our educational support work, together with our psychologist, we have incorporated and carried out sessions of Integral Sex Education (EIS), which teach the themes of rights, gender equality, and sexual and reproductive health, promoted by UNESCO.

Faena
With the help of our entire parent community, we carried out our very first "faena" in Intiwawa! This activity involved the parents in small maintenance of Casa Intiwawa, including cleaning all the spaces, working on planting herbs, flowers and fruits & vegetables for our small garden, as well as repainting some of our classrooms.

Recycling
One of our wonderful volunteers organized an activity with our students to raise awareness for recycling in their community! The children picked up plastic bottles, metal, and paper from the area neighbooring Intiwawa. Back at casa intiwawa, we sorted out the items and put recycling bins in each of our classrooms for paper and plastic to continue with environmental awareness and action!

Student Day
We celebrated Student Day with our Intiwawa students and teachers! The children cooked cookies and we had a drawing competition around the theme of Intiwawa. The 3 winners got prizes and all the children took home a goodie bag.

Outing to French Alliance
On a saturday, we took our primary school students on an outing to the French Alliance here in Arequipa, to participate in their 'lecturas compartidas' activities. Our students got to listen to poems, participate in fun games, see a puppet show about a fairy tale, and paint theater props!

Parents School
During September's Parents School, we communicated the results of the anemia and malnutrition campain to the parents, and our nutritionist organized a workshop for the parents to better understand the short and long-term impact of these health issues as well as cost-effective solutions for increasing iron intake for their children. She also scheduled individual sessions with the parents for the following week, in order to better target the parents who need the most support. Our psychologist also gave a workshop around Duties and Rights in the home. Finally, we conducted satistfacion questionnaires with all the parents to better understand their expectations and the impact of Parents School.

Monthly outing
For our monthly outing in September, we took 40 Intiwawa children to the Mall Aventura for Children's Day, to enjoy a snack of crepes, ice cream and soda generously gifted by "Oh la la Creperia". The children also played at the park and had their faces painted, and the older ones enjoyed arcade games!
