Visit to South Africa

During May 2018 the Orlando Pirates Learning centre welcomed 2 teachers and 4 students from Germany on an educational exchange programme in South Africa. This programme represents the pinnacle of the partnership between the learning centre and Orlando High school in Soweto and is the return visit after students and teachers from the Learning Centre and Orlando High visited Germany in May last year.

The exchange programme is an initiative of Shulverein “ An der Egge” e.V and the Orlando Pirates Learning Centre between the schools Shulzentrum Blumenthal from Germany and Orlando High School from South Africa. The school exchange programme was supported by the ENSA programme of Engagement Global gGmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The programme enabled both groups of students to participate in workshops and educate each other in different areas of interest such as ‘breaking down barriers’, ‘overcoming stereotypes’ and ‘developing their own communities’ through education. The educational work ensures that the young people acquire the necessary skills to spread their knowledge and abilities back in their respective home countries.

The students and teachers also got to experience some of the sights and events that South Africa has to offer as part of their trip. Highlights for the group included:

  • A bus tour of Johannesburg and its surroundings
  • Attending the final PSL match of the season at Orlando stadium
  • A bicycle tour through Soweto to learn about its history.
  • The ENSA workshops and developing group work skills.
  • The open day at Orlando High School to increase awareness of the programme.
  • Volunteering at other schools around Johannesburg and learning about the education system
  • Developing and initiating our Bicycle recycling tour of Soweto with the Orlando high students
