    Über das Projekt

    Y. Mwale von Support To Older People - Zambia (STOP-Zambia ) ist für dieses Projekt verantwortlich
In Zambia, 83% of the population work in the informal sector without social protection leaving only 17% in the formal sector to access social protection. This situation has contributed to old age poverty where informal sector workers retire without any form of social security to replace their income. As they grow older, these workers become less productive with their strength diminishing everyday of their lives. Unfortunately, in this condition, they bare the responsibility of looking after their grand children whose parents have died in most cases from HIV/AIDS. In their situation, they are left with the responsibility of taking care of these orphaned children, in other cases, they look after disabled children. In Zambia, older people face a number of challenges, while various organisations have come in to support them in different ways such as helping them with children orphaned due to HIV/AIDS and other diseases; housing still remains a challenge for these older people especially in Shanty townships and rural areas. They live in licking, cracked houses, grass thatched houses, with no ventilation and in most cases without secure doors to protect them from ruthless thieves. In towns, these older people are in the streets begging and spending cold nights under the bridges and at bus stations in some cases stranded with meeting bus fares. TThese older people are sometimes a victim of poor perception and rejection in their families and communities as they are usually suspected of being witches and wizards.
Therefore, in 2015, Support To Older People-Zambia (STOP-Zambia) was registered to help improve the quality of lives of the older people so as help them live a decent and dignified life.
As a start up organisation, we are currently doing surveys in Lusaka's Shanty compounds of Misisi and Kuku in the areas of our objectives. In these areas, we have found out that housing and proper sanitation is a challenge especially for these old people. Therefore, we have picked 20 older peoples houses that are in a very bad shape at the total cost of 11,000 Euros which has been broken down as follows:
    1. Labour of repairing and demolishing and building afresh using local contractors - 2,000 Euros
    2. cost of assorted building materials for the 20 houses and VIP pit Latrine toilets- 8,000 Euros
    3. Transportation of building materials 1,000 Euros
    Total cost 11,000 euros
We look forward to your support. By your contribution, you will help Ambuya age with Dignity and Honour.
