Winter and nearing the end of the second term

It is wintertime and recently a weekend of relentless rain left the surrounding mountains covered with a blanket of snow. Yes, it does snow here although only on higher altitudes.
Another two weeks of school in which the middle and high school students write exams before a three week winter break announces itself.
We can only hope that the children and their families can keep warm as houses and shacks are not heated. People try to warm themselves around fires wrapped in a blanket or use a parafin stove. This can lead to fires and devastation especially in the townships. The rains also wreak havoc as they flood the shacks making the ground on which people live wet and muddy. Children are sick as this is an unhealthy environment. On top of that the prices in electricity are rising with 16% which eats in an already stretched budget.
As I mentioned before in a blog education is the one single element which determines whether you will be poor or not. Education is vital so that our children will be able to continue their studies or find a good job with an income to sustain themselves and their families adequately.
No other time is this felt so strongly as in wintertime because when you are poor you cannot protect yourself and your children from the weather elements.
