ARTIST PROOF STUDIO is an Art Education Centre that specializes in printmaking through a variety of diverse partnerships with creative young artists, established professional artists, community groups, patrons and funders.
Founded in 1991 by Kim Berman and Nhlanhla Xaba, (APS) is situated in the Newtown Cultural Precinct of inner-city Johannesburg. Established as an art centre promoting democratic values of reconciliation, cultural diversity, equality, and above all, a culture that celebrates human rights. APS is a not-for-profit Section 21 company.
Our Mission is: to provide an environment to develop people with a common set of values, expressed in the notion of ubuntu, who have talent and passion to achieve artistic excellence.
APS focuses on printmaking skills development we train between 80 and 100 disadvantaged learners to become professional artists and well-rounded citizens. APS aims to build the capacity of its students by providing them with the necessary holistic skills to become professional practitioners, empowered and self-sustaining individuals, and community leaders.
Art and Activism:
Using art and craft to promote social change
APS programmes embody a strong commitment to the use of art in promoting positive social change and development. We are actively involved in a series of community engagement activities including advocacy murals as well as cultural action programmes that focus on empowering women and children through art and craft, especially those in communities affected by HIV/AIDS.
