Help teach rural pupil to read and write in After Class Hours program

Teaching low performing school children to improve on their grades in rural areas whose parents income is low and the four major components of the program are: Homework assistance, Extra tuition (Maths,Eng, Science and IT) and Sports.

There is a tremendous need, especially low academic performance among pupils in rural public schools, for programs that provide activities and support for children during the after class hours and throughout the academic year. According to the Basic Education Certificate Examination(BECE) analysis posted on facebook in November, 10 public schools in the Ketu North obtained zero percent 0% in the 2013 BECE results which means that none of the kids in these schools could further their education to Senior high school. Positive opportunities and measures are needed to enhance their learning and keep them on track so that they will realize their full potential in future and develop their villages at large . Also majority of these pupils who complete the Basic Education Certificate Examination in the rural communities cannot read and write.
In addition, a publication on Ghanaweb (13th February 2012) reported that results from the John Gatsi Annual Educational Excellence Award involving the best 54 students from 27 Junior High Schools in the district were dismal with only 7.5 per cent of them making the grade.
Current research indicates that well supervised after-class hours program does not only improve students performance but generate positive outcomes for pupils including improved class room behavior, health and nutrition
The Afife traditional area in the ketu north district of the Volta region Ghana has lower than average incidence of low academic performance for its children in the Basic Education, lack extra tuition and coaching after class hours. W.S.F saw the potential benefits of a quality after-class program for pupil in rural public schools. To provide excellent academic performance among the public school in rural areas, Wise and Solace Foundation developed a program to teach low performing school children in rural areas to improve their grades through ‘After Class Hours ‘program. The program serves children a from class four to six in public schools whose parent’s income is very low and are mainly subsistence farmers in rural deprived villages of the Afife Traditional areas.
