    Über das Projekt

Bryony M. von Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch ist für dieses Projekt verantwortlich
The Isle of Man is a small island in the middle of the Irish Sea, and supports many marine mammal species including whales, dolphins, porpoises, and seals. Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch is a very small organisation which works hard year round to study these amazing animals. Though people see them regularly from the shore, we still don't know a lot about how and why these animals use Manx waters, and how important different areas are at different times of year. In the scientific literature there is next to nothing published about marine mammals around the Isle of Man, so we have a lot to learn.

The Isle of Man also hosts quite an unusual species - the Risso's dolphin, pictured above. This is usually thought of as quite a deep diving species, and is not studied very much, but they are regularly seen in the shallow waters around the island, particularly in the summer months. Risso's dolphins, as well as many of the other marine mammal species seen here, are protected under the Manx Wildlife Act and a number of European conventions, so there is a real need to ensure the importance of Manx waters to these animals is understood, so they can be conserved for future generations. This is why Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch work to research marine mammals around the island, from both land and boat, and conduct education and outreach to raise awareness and help others enjoy these beautiful animals.

The costs associated with researching marine mammals (e.g. boat hire and fuel) are high, and Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch receives very little funding to help with this. Additionally, as the Isle of Man is not part of the UK (it is a British Crown Dependency) it often does not qualify for research grants issued by UK organisations.

This is why we are asking you lovely people in internet land for help. We have two C-PODs which are a type of hydrophone, or underwater microphone. These can be used to detect the echolocation clicks that dolphins and porpoises use for navigation and hunting. They will help to tell us about the amount of time different species use different areas around the island. Unfortunately one of them is in need of repair, and as a specialised piece of equipment this is quite expensive.

Thanks to kind donations we have already been able to purchase a theodolite (a piece of equipment used by surveyors to measure accurate angles and distances), which we can use to accurately track whales and dolphins from land, so we can create maps of the different areas they are using. Having this equipment will greatly improve the quality of the data we can collect, and allow us to learn much more about how marine mammals use the waters around the Isle of Man.

We know there are lots of demands on your money in this day and age, and many worthy causes to donate to. Even the smallest amount will be a great help to us, and hugely appreciated, and it will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

A huge thank you in advance!
