Über das Projekt

I made a guidebook that invites people to reflect on violence in films, violence in society and their own personal relationship to violence. The book functions as a catalogue for my art project Direct Approach and serves at the same time as a practical working guide on how to put an always current and relevant topic such as violence on the agenda and both creatively, theoretically and practically work with the topic.
HOW?
The project is based on memories of violent film scenes and asks people to describe the most violent film scene they have ever watched.
A class or group of people can with the help of the book be guided on how to carry out interviews on their recollections of violent film scenes, and how the reports can be preserved on a film poster and followed up by video recorded enactment.
WHY IS DIRECT APPROACH IMPORTANT?
The project offers an important reflection on our own violent sides and its program raises ethical topics that are more relevant today than ever before because (young) people are excessively exposed to violence on visual media and their ethics are heavily influenced by those experiences.
I made the guidebook in collaboration with Danish language psychologist Anne Uhrskov and it is based on a social design of Direct Approach, an art project about film and violence, which I began in 2012 in order to provide a platform for individual discussions for and with people about violence, taboos and ethics.
The guidebook focuses on identification and understanding of violence in films and reality. It consists of several interviews and statements on violence and includes a recipe for the art project Direct Approach in a concise and clear step-by-step instruction which shows users of the book how they can interview each other about the most horrible film scene experience and how the film scene can be remembered down to the smallest detail.
The goal of the book is to become an inspiration and useful tool for schools and other social institutions who wish to work with the topic violence.
COLLABORATORS
The social design of Direct Approach the Guide Book is currently with great success being tested in cooperation with District Kunst - und Kulturförderung and collaboration with Gangway and Streetcollege in a 6 month workshop for young people between 13-25 years old in Berlin, Germany. The young participants are the in the workshop producers of interviews, film posters, films and an exhibition. Their statements and developed perspectives on how identities are defined within discourses of violence, are opened for a broad public reflection in an exhibition in District on 2014. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqwLSW-_5Lw.
Later this year it will also be made as workshops for young people in three other countries - Denmark, Colombia and Ireland.
