South Sudan faces challenges in building a strong economy. Industrialization and modernization cannot be achieved without proper access to electricity. Electricity is supplied through diesel-powered generators and yet, more than 99% of the South Sudanese people are without access to electricity. It is estimated that only 1% (120,000 people) of the 12 million people in South Sudan are connected to the nation’s electric power grid, and most of those live in Juba, the capital. This has forced many pupils/students in major towns and villages to burn expensive paraffin; most people can’t afford this. Like burning diesel fuel, paraffin harms humans, the environment and the air. Inadequate alternatives compel pupils, students and the local population to cut down trees, which increases the negative effects of global warming and climate change. Burning paraffin can cause health problems to pupils, and they must be careful when they burn it inside, during study time.
To make this sustainable for students/pupils from 12-23 years old who are primary leaving certificate and secondary education candidates. We will first train how good solar torches/lamps are to both humans and the environment compared to burning paraffin and firewood. This training will not be about convincing students to use solar lights/torches but we will also train them how to read to increase the literacy rate in South Sudan. They will also be trained as an ambassador for Mawoudit Foundation to train their colleagues about the goodness of solar energy to the environment and its surrounding. This problem forced to use of International organizations and UN agencies' security light to studies across South Sudan.
We would like to request members, supporters, fans of Mawoudit Foundation and the general public to donate a minimum of $, £, € 1-10 per month to enable us to distribute 2,500 solar torches to pupils at Deng Maker Primary School, primary and secondary school student candidates.
One solar torch cost Euro 9.5 times 2500 which will make a sum of Euro 23,750 and administration plus transportation cost is Euro 3,721 for the next six months. And the overall total amount for this project is € 27,471.
