A study realized by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics in 2005 found that the unemployment rate in the Likoni area of Mombasa is a staggering 74%.As education is the main avenue towards employment, a large problem in the area is that many youths are unable to attend school. This is due to the school-related fees, such as uniforms and books which have made education expensive. Due to the high incidence of HIV/AIDS many youths and small children are left on their own or living with guardians who often cannot afford to pay these fees. Without a proper education, the prospects of employment for these youths become remote; however, formal school education is not the only type of education that results in employment opportunities. The quarterly computer literacy and tailoring courses offered by Hurenet since 2008, are affordable classes that provides the youths with crucial knowledge and technical skills necessary in obtaining employment and rising above the cycle of poverty. Hurenet is also active in mobilizing community members to be advocates of change and emphasizes responsibility as the key to change through community clean-up initiatives and outreach events.
