Über uns

Kalunga Primary School in Mangúla has 400 students, many who are orphaned and vunerable, attending classes Standard 1 to Standard 7, in a building which is 2 classrooms short of adequate. The parent and teachers of this school community are committed to improving the physical environment in which children are learning. Currently there are 2 grade levels which take classes outside under the trees, using desks built from bricks which are left over from attempted construction of the additional classrooms. These classrooms were started but work was abandoned when money ran out. They are now just walls without any roofs or floors. In rainy season, the desks of the outdoor classrooms wash away and must be rebuilt when the rains stop. There are just 2 outdoor latrines for these 400 students and no funding available to construct more. The school is situated in a remote area of this village andoften roads arre also impassable, especially to children without shoes. However, there is a very high level of parent and teacher cooperation in solving these current issues, as well as a plan to become a model rural school by using solar energy and developing their 14 acre plot for community use.
