FABIO - First African Bicycle Information Organiation- an NGO based in Jinja, Uganda. Since being found in 1997, our goal is to create an empowered society by making sustainable mobility more accessible. To reach so, our main tool for transformation is the bicycle.
The Cycle to School project is an educational empowerment program at community level addressing student retention, attendance and performance outcomes. Children without a bicycle walking long distances to school face many challenges including increased tardiness, exhaustion and safety risks. Some students live 12 km away from school and therefore have to start walking at 5 am when it is still dark and arrive home in the evening in the dark again. Adolescent girls, in particular, are at risk for rape and for complete withdrawal from the educational system.
