Dance for All - Overview

Every day, hundreds of children spend their afternoon at Dance for All (DFA) classes, learning Ballet, African, Contemporary and Spanish dance. Students of all levels of ability- ranging from age three to young adults- are welcomed at these classes held in school classrooms and community halls in the historically disadvantaged comunities of Gugulethu, Nyanga and Khayelitsha, as well as in the studios at DFA's Athlone home base, and reaching to the rural areas of Barrydale, Montagu/ Zolani, McGregor, Nkqubela (outside Robertson) and Bonnievale.

Dance for All was founded in 1991 by Philip Boyd, a former principal dancer with CAPAB (Cape Town City Ballet). Starting with 34 children in Gugulethu, DFA has established itself as a sustainable, well-managed organisation, today reaching approximately 1500 children and youth.

Beyond teaching dance, the classes encourage the children's creativity, self- discipline and confidence. These qualities flow into thier daily life, underpinned by self-worth and a sense of purpose.

Dance for All is also a widely respected school of dance; students receive first- class training from a talented and diverse teaching team and a new generation of professional South African dancers is being produced. DFA's Specialised Dance Programm provide talented students with intensive dance training to prepare them for careers in the performing arts. To date, over twenty DFA students have gone on to work as dancers, dance teachers and choreographers in South Africa and abroad.

Hope Nongqongqo, a founding student, now holds the post of Cape Town Outreach Co-ordinator, and Noluyanda Mqulwana, who started with DFA at age nine, is now Contemporary Ballet Programme Co-ordinator. These women are role models and shining examples of what DFA aims to achieve.
