Über uns

See and Be Seen 117-221 NPO is a non-profit organisation established to raise awareness of pedestrian safety and proactively prevent road accidents, by promoting the use of Safety Reflectors and educating the public about road safety and the importance of being seen when walking in traffic during hours of decreased visibility.

See and Be Seen believes in thinking differently in the approach to road safety and are going to alter the status quo in traffic. We are going to do this by making safety reflectors that are simple, user friendly and yet have an engaging and fun design. A design that can easily incorporate advertising and promotional opportunities, whilst saving lives and lowering fatalities on South African roads.

Statistics:
Around 14 000 people die on South African roads every year,
approximately 5000 (40%) of these deaths are pedestrians (incl. runners and cyclists).
3500 (65-70%) of all fatal pedestrian accidents occur between Dusk and Dawn, the period of reduced visibility.
Road death is the leading cause of death among people between the ages of 15 and 29.

What differences can a Safety Reflector Make?
The risk of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian increases by 1100% between dusk and dawn due to the reduced visibility.
A safety reflector increases the visibility of a pedestrian to a driver by anywhere between 300 and 1,000% (depending on distance, darkness, weather, and the placement of the safety reflector).
An estimated 3 000 pedestrian fatalities can be avoided in South Africa every year through the use of safety reflectors.
The increased use of safety reflectors makes the road safer not only for the pedestrian but for the driver who may be charged with culpable homicide should they kill a pedestrian.
A safety reflector will give many children in South Africa the prospect of growing up with parents, as many of the pedestrian fatalities involves parents.
Statistics indicate that even though there are less people moving in traffic at night, 65-70 % of all fatal pedestrian accidents happen between dusk and dawn. This is because under normal dark conditions a pedestrian walking on the side of a road is only visible to a driver from a distance of 10 to 60 meters. However, if a pedestrian is wearing a safety reflector they are visible from a distance of up to 160 meters. (The braking distance of a car traveling at 30km/h is 10.7 meters, and a car traveling at 120km/h has a braking distance of 108 meters)
Safety refectory may be the most effective and cheapest life insurance a person can get yet most people in South Africa do not know what a safety reflector is.
