Kibera, one of Africa’s largest slum, is a microcosm of many of the world’s most vexing issues –poverty & unemployment, poor healthcare, severe water shortage, the spread of HIV infection, and lack of women’s rights. The vain pursuit of employment to meet basic human needs has left so many of Kibera’s youth without hope and purpose. As thus, even the most exceptional and promising youth in Kibera lack opportunities to get formal education, live a healthy life, and lead others as agents of change.
There are over 400,000 kids living in the vast Kibera slums. Too many of these kids are being lost. They’re becoming school dropouts, teen parents, and victims of violence and HIV/Aids orphans. The Kibera Sport Development is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to empower the Kibera children and youth through sports and education. We try to build the capacity of the children using sports and education as key tools, and train them to gradually sustain and scale up themselves and their activities by offering them the opportunity to reach their potential and progressively scale up and bear the entire weight themselves.
The vision of Running for Education is to enable talented athletes to stay in school while pursuing their athletic interests by offering education alongside athletic programs. Children in our program receive school fees and supplies, such as uniforms and books and get a four years in secondary school.
We are fundraising to sponsor 26 talented children to four years in high school from January 2012. The cost of educating one child for one year is 500 euros which is fairly small by western terms.
