Success Stories from Burundi: Together for a Brighter Future✨
The 2023–2024 school year has been a year of transformation for children, schools, and communities in Burundi! Thanks to dedicated efforts, Welthungerhilfe has achieved incredible milestones:
Reducing School Dropout Rates
✅ Dropout and absenteeism rates decreased from 12.3% to 9%, ensuring more children stay in school and build a better future.
Academic Success
📚 Despite challenges like food shortages and overcrowded classrooms, Kirundo province reached an average national exam success rate of 79.03%!
🏆 Two communities exceeded 94% success, while five others surpassed 82%—a testament to the resilience of students and teachers.
Better Nutrition & Food Security
🌱 16.1 kg of vegetable seeds and 1,923 fruit and agroforestry plants were distributed, including 1,400 fruit trees like jackfruit and avocado.
🌿 Innovative kitchen gardens and "bag cultures" were introduced to enhance child nutrition.
Improved Access to Clean Water & Hygiene
🚰 20 rainwater collection systems installed at 10 model schools, ensuring a reliable water supply.
🚻 Six ecological latrines built, and drinking water sources constructed for nearby schools.
Protecting the Environment & Greening Schools
🌳 At Kibonde Primary School, 238 fruit trees were planted, providing shade, reducing dust, and improving nutrition.
🥑 Over 5,000 avocados and 150 jackfruits have already been harvested and served in school meals!
Safe Water for Schools
🏫 At Ecofo Gitwe Primary School, the installation of four rainwater collection systems ended long walks to fetch water from Lake Cohoha. Now, children have clean water for drinking, sanitation, and school meals—improving their well-being and education.
🌍 These successes prove that community-driven solutions can create lasting change! But there is still more to do.
