Mathare Foundation is a community based organization registered with the Kenyan Government. The organization main purpose is to train and create opportunities for children and youths in sports, media, and performing arts and enhance their leadership skills. It was established to help disadvantaged children nurture their talents and make them engage in productive initiative. Mathare Foundation has 40 committed and passionate trainees. They are very active and they always want to learn new things.
The organization has three officials who help in the day to day running of the organization. The Project coordinator is task is to ensure that activities take place as scheduled and also works in getting new partners and benefactors for the program. The finance person is responsible for ensuring that organization money is well accounted for. We have a secretary who ensures that organization meetings and other records are in place and up to date. As an organization we value transparency and integrity among our members and officials.
Mathare slum is a home of about 400,000 people. Most of this population lives below the poverty index. In the slum houses are made either of mud or corrugated iron sheet. Mathare slum is the second largest slum after Kibera in East Africa region. In the slums, the number children involved in child trafficking, crime, drug abuse prostitution, early marriages and pregnancies have risen to an alarming rate. It is such programs like Mathare Foundation helps reduce such cases. Despite these vices there is a ray of hope through development programs in the slum.
