We started „JOY CHRISTIAN NURSERY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL“ in 2010 and by now we can really see the impact the school has on the children!
Because school fees are very high here in Uganda and we have quite a number of children in the home and in the neighborhood who have no parents or only a single parent or grandmother who cares for them, normally they would not be able to go to a good school.
There are governmental schools with 100 to 200 children per class that they could attend, but still they have to buy school uniforms, books and other scholastic material and the quality of education is very, very poor.
If we would send the children to boarding schools in the city (we are in the village) every child would have to pay 600 000 Ugandan Schilling (UGX) per term (three month) (250 US $).
For 20 children it would be 12 million UGX (4.900 US $) a term or 4 million UGX a month (1.600 US$).
With the own school we have a lot of benefits!
- The school is near, so children can easily walk but sleep at home.
- It is much cheaper to pay the teachers than paying school fees.
- We can choose the teachers and influence the way they teach and tell them to teach Christian values to the children.
- We can invite other orphans and vulnerable children outside our home to join the school and give them access to free and good education.
We have seen a big impact on the children and they struggle hard to learn get educated, because without education they won’t have a chance to get a good work, which can sustain them and their families.
The teacher’s salary and office rent is 2.200.000 UGX per month which is around 900US$ or 690€.
For a year with three terms it is 19.800.000 UGX ( 8100 US$ / 6 200€).
We started the school by faith and up to now we were able to go from month to month and this is what we also hope for in the future, even we often face challenges.
