The Shahrak Women's Center in Herat, Afghanistan, was founded in 2003 by a group of young women who had run an underground school during the Taliban era. The association has always been supported by the Freiburg-based association Deutsch-Afghanische Initiative e.V. and has been able to hold courses and workshops in its own premises since 2015. Many women have been able to become self-employed with their own business using the skills acquired at the center. A variety of courses are offered: English, computer, cell phone repair, cosmetics, sewing, self-defense and much more. There is also a young cycling team at the women's center, which has already participated in a race in the province of Bamiyan.
