Note: this is a follow-up page to CO2 Offseting - Citizen in Burkina Faso adopt trees on their land for you which has been successfully financed and carried out within the project Reforestation in Burkina Faso.
Presentation of the project partners
The project Reforestation in Burkina Faso, established in 2019, aims at planting and sustaining trees in Burkina Faso on a long time frame for the generations to come. The project partners are the Women’s association and village community of Kaonghin, the Department of Rural Development in the University of Bobo-Dioulasso, the NGOs New Humanity, Cirdes and 2ie and the Greening Africa Together university network and student groups.
CO2-compensation
In the project sites all over Burkina Faso in Kaonghin, Nasso and Bama, people are working together to preserve the forests and plant new trees. The value created by this process include ecosystem service and sequestration of atmospheric carbon. Trees can provide fruits or other products, sustain water in the soil and prevent erosion of fertile soil top layers especially during the rainy season, provide shade and can house other animals. There is also the socio-economic impact on livelihoods by diversification of income generation. With CO2 compensation funds, actions that sustain and expand forests can be supported and strengthened. Six main Sustainable Development goals are addressed in this project: Climate Action, Life on Land, Clean Water and Sanitation, Quality Education, Affordable and Clean Energy and Partnerships for the Goals.
What has been achieved so far?
In 2021, 1800 trees were distributed to 400 farmers in Kaonghin and 30 trees were planted at the school of the village. These were the trees chosen by the farmers: 800 Mango, 400 Moringa, 200 Baobab, 200 Citrus, 100 Nere and 100 Guave trees.
Furthermore, 50 cashew trees were planted in Nasso by the student team. An area of 1.2 ha was fenced and thus protected against animals, illegal logging or farming. Additionally, many trees were planted in Bama.
What are the next goals?
The upcoming goals aim at expanding the reforestation actions, to monitor planted trees and to develop workshops and strengthen project communication. The two main goals are the establishment of a tree nursery in Nasso and a Solar Well in Kaonghin. The tree nursery helps to save money when needing seedlings to plant. The Solar Well reduces competition for water usage in Kaonghin. All goals and objectives are a good beginning and can be scaled up later on, when funding for the basic activities has been secured. We would deeply appreciate your support.
What are donations used for?
Donations will be used to cover costs for establishing the tree nursery, installing the solar well and any other expenses related to the project.
