About this project

Lukas Thiele from Digitale Bühne gGmbH is responsible for this project
New ways for culture in times of the pandemic and beyond

The fourth wave of COVID-19 pandemics is hitting the country with full force and as a result, cultural events are being cancelled again, at least in some regions, so that once again cultural workers and ensembles are trying to switch to the internet with online rehearsals and online performances. At the same time, the digitalisation also holds important innovation potentials for culture. For this purpose, our non-profit company Digitale Bühne gGmbH provides urgently needed software based on technologies from various experts. In order to be able to do this on fair terms and, if possible, even free of charge for those involved in culture, we need your donation for the next development phase of this project.

Common video conferencing systems are unsuitable for artistic use because they distort the sound, only allow two to three voices at a time and have a high delay in sound and image transmission (latency). Usable commercial alternatives are often expensive, complicated or offer only individual components. This is where the software project of the Digital Stage gGmbH comes in and develops an open source solution optimised for cultural life, via which, depending on the version, ten to thirty people can rehearse together online from different locations or perform in front of an audience. Prototypes of the software have been tested for a year and used at selected online events.

The software version digital-stage-web can be used via an internet browser with standard household devices. Although it has a significantly longer latency of up to 100 ms than a 15 m wide stage in the real world (approx. 45 ms), under these conditions at least drama and dance rehearsals are possible, musical rehearsals (e.g. choir rehearsals), however, only with significant restrictions. Suitable for this is the digital-stage-pc version, based on Christof Ruch's JammerNetz technology with only up to 50 ms latency, which is installed on the computer. The top version is the digital-stage-ovbox, which is based on the technology of the project partner ORLANDOviols and is a separate, pre-installed mini-computer. The software, however, can also be the basis for artistic innovations that lead, for example, to new kinds of event formats. This is supported by the interdisciplinary community that has come together in this project and which enables cross-genre, integrative work.

The Digitale Bühne gGmbH and its software emerged from an initiative of the !KF - Institute for Artistic Research Berlin as part of the Hackathon #WirVsVirus of the German government.
