About this project

Githurai is an informal settlement on the outskirt of Nairobi, it has approximately 450 000 people--with more than 65% being young people. The community has limited public institutions which are in bad conditions. This has contributed to extremely high illiteracy, and unemployment rates are above 45%. With no education or work background to fall back on, the high rate of poverty often results in young people engaging in commercial sex, drug abuse and other criminal activities.
To realize the above mission, we have 3 main programs: the Nurturing Program, Social Enterprise Incubator Program, and Mtaa Yangu "My community" program.
Nurturing program involves supporting 500 local vulnerable children to access and excel in universal primary education. This is through Inuka sanitary pad project and Inuka back to school project whereby Inuka sanitary pad project involves offering mentorship and sanitary pads to 400 vulnerable girls in primary school. The project has reduced absenteeism and improved academic performance of the girls while Inuka back to school project involves supporting 120 vulnerable children with school supplies, uniform and shoes to attend school thus reducing school drop out. This program relies on volunteers hence we are in the process of establishing poultry project to sustain the program and benefit more girls.
Our Social Enterprise Incubator program involves training local young people on business, vocational and life skills. In order to accomplish this, earlier in 2014 we successfully established a vocational training center to offer classes in computer skills, knitting and sewing, as well as jewelry making. At the moment, we have initiated the computer classes and jewelry making, and seek to include sewing and knitting classes so we can impact more young people in the community, especially women wanting to become self reliant and independent. We kindly request you to support in the establishing of the vocational Training Center hence more local young people will be equipped with effective skills, and once we are able to expand into sewing and knitting classes, the students will be able to make school uniforms for needy children.
The Mtaa Yangu, or "My Community" program, involves creating platforms where local youths will be educated, sensitized and informed on various issues thus actively involved in decision making & development of Githurai. There are 3 annual events in April, August and December.
We kindly request volunteers to support us by donating to the above projects to enable local youth to be Nurtured, Empowered and Transformed into self-reliant and independent members of society --reducing illiteracy, poverty and crime in the next generation.
