About this project

EDUCATION IS THE FUTURE

Our 70-seat school library is the only place many students have to do their homework, prepare for exams or learn on their own. The stock of books is constantly being increased to promote literacy and broaden access to knowledge. Textbooks in Kenya must be purchased by parents and are prohibitively expensive for most.

Health education - our partner talks to children and young people about health topics such as menstrual hygiene, STIs, family planning and role models.

Children from poor families cannot afford to pay for school after the 8th grade. Pupil sponsorships support individual children according to our selection and support criteria.

Our next project is to develop the school library into a community center offering Internet access and basic computer training.

Supporting the Nyamuga Special Needs School.

RUSINGA GOES GREEN

RUSINGA ISLAND has been systematically deforested by wood consumption for food preparation over open wood fires and for building houses for the growing population. Erosion and desertification threaten agricultural yields and thus livelihoods. We need long-term support for our environmental projects.

Our partner association has been operating a tree nursery since April 2020. The income generated by the sale of seedlings is used for charitable purposes.

Seedlings can only grow if they are protected from animal browsing by fences. Therefore, the first plantings sponsored by our partner could take place in the area of schools that have been fenced in the meantime. Many more plantings are necessary.

In order to counteract the strong erosion during the rainy season, the construction of gabions is started.

EMPOWERING THE COMMUNITY

Ubuntu means community spirit. Our partner has launched the first UBUNTU initiative with a revolving micro-loan for chicken farms. After 18 months, 60 of the poorest families across Rusinga Island will be able to support themselves with chicken meat and eggs and earn an income.

Our concern is to secure the food basis or the generation of income through the formation of cooperatives and the promotion of skills. Often, only a small amount of start-up funding is needed.

With our next projects we also promote the self-production of, among other things, nose-mouth masks, later menstrual pads and school uniforms, as well as the cultivation of vegetables for self-sufficiency using permaculture methods.

An onland fish farm including a training program has been started in 2021 as an alternative to the overfished and polluted Lake Victoria ensuring the continous access for the community to nutricious fish.
