About this project

During a 2-months internship in a NGO in 2010 during my studies of industrial engineering I had the opportunity to found a sustainable project. It supports around 150 women in 10 villages. In these villages, from the western point of view life seems medieval as if development had stopped thousands of years ago. Most families do not have more than a little field to grow vegetables and a few chickens to feed their children. The sad result is that children cannot go to school because they have to help on the fields. Women have to walk half a day carrying heavy baskets on their head to a neighboring village. And this solely to earn a few cents by selling goods likes bananas or avocados. Thanks to my project there is now hope for improvement.
Together with local colleagues of the NGO JVE “Jeunes Volontaires pour l’Environnement” we located 11 groups of dedicated women that were gathering in order to improve the living conditions of their family. In so called “Groupements” they meet weekly not only to exchange their daily sorrows but to organize common work on their proper fields. Unfortunately most of them lack any education. That is why they need help. Basic tips about how to cultivate their fields more efficiently, how to manage their finances or how to plan activities for the future can change their life drastically.
With the money that you donate on this page, agricultural experts and sociologist of JVE will be paid to support these women. They visit the women groups on a regular basis to help them help themselves. Furthermore crucial tools and resources (seeds and animals) will be bought. You can donate your money to exactly those things, you think that are most important for the women on this website (on the right site).
From September 2010 till September 2014 I was able to send 23.722 € to this project due to generous donators that were either family or friends of mine or visitors of this great platform betterplace.org. (Thank you for your support and your confidence!) A major part of the money came from students from my University in Karlsruhe having participated in various charity actions I have organized.
If you want to know more about the project please feel free to contact me any time through betterplace or lena.diekhans@gmail.com and I will send you detailed reports (if you understand French). To know more about my experiences in Togo you can also read my blog (if you understand German…)
