About this project
PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) is a German initiative which made it possible to build, equip and develop the unit to an autonomously operating part of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle, Sri Lanka. PICU was started as a consequence to the 2004 Tsunami catastrophe, which left so many children dead since intensive care treatment was missing.
All money for the PICU came and comes just on the basis of private donations.
At present 10 doctors, 24 nurses, and 6 helpers are working round the clock. Until end of 2014 more than 800 deadly ill little patients could be treated stationarily, with other words: 120 patients per year.
PICU is now extended by an Intermediate Care Station (IMC) on the upper floor with 10 more beds. IMC is an essential part of intensive care: After direct life saving interventions most patients need to be treated in the specialized IMC where close treatment over 24 hrs is guaranteed. All IMC equipment was sponsored; it is now waiting for successful recruitment of further staff - nurses and doctors.
Autonomy and good standards in intensive care need a quantum leap in speed and radical acting as THE success drivers. The German doctors and nurses are trying to support their Sri Lankan peers to accomplish that level. A fostership agreement had been settled - mostly about training for doctors and nurses, either in Germany or in Sri Lanka. In 2014 a weekly "jour fix" by skype has been started between docotors and nurses of both sides, in order to discuss all cases regarding diagnosis, therapy, and e-learning with very promising results.
What's needed?
Education and training! Financial support for covering travel and accomodation costs for the trainings of doctors and nurses either in Hannover or in Galle; medicine, specific for the treatment of children; effective cleansing agents and disinfectants to make hygiene efforts effective; bitterly poor parents often from far come into PICU for their last hope and don't have even a bed or food.
Why should I contribute?
1,5 Million children in the Southwest region around Galle and the 9 plus 10 PICU places – this is just the famous drop in the ocean, but a very important one, since it might become THE starting point of a new era of medical treatment for children in Sri Lanka.
And you can be absolutely sure – as in the past – not one cent of the donations will be misused, all goes directly into the project without any administrative cost. The local Lions Club of Hikkaduwa controls the investments, takes care and stands for this promise.
