About this project

Providing free libraries to schools in disadvantaged areas of India – Helping children to read and learn.

How narrow would your life be today if you had only ever read the set school textbooks? Or no books! Well, that is the experience of many children today in schools in India. There is a lack of emphasis on reading and learning abilities. Schools neither have the facilities nor provide encouragement to children to widen their knowledge, skills, and imagination through accessing a range of books.

By providing a library of books for Schools, the aim of this IAHV project is to give underprivileged children access to quality books, to promote their reading and learning and to expand their knowledge. As part of promoting holistic, value-based education, IAHV is partnering with the Read Library Project to setup School libraries in India. Till date more than 135 libraries have been setup, benefitting nearly 32,500 children. The Read Library Project is delivering and monitoring the libraries which will be funded by IAHV.

“Education is the key to beating poverty and the greatest investment we can make for global prosperity and the future of our world.” DFID UK aid: Changing lives, delivering results 2012.

Across the world, the focus on the Millennium Development Goal of getting children into primary education has generally drawn attention away from learning outcomes and ensuring the quality of education. This project firmly addresses the need to improve the quality of children’s education.

IAHV UK has committed to continue support and expand the work of setting libraries. People with an Indian connection may want to support a school in a town or village in India where they were brought up or where family members live. We continue to engage with various NGOs, civil society and our volunteers in India to expand our reach and setup libraries in more Schools.
