    About this project

    B. Wambergue from Moidjio C.R.C.A.D. is responsible for this project
Moheli is the least developed island of the Comoros far away from the traditional tourist routes.
The cristal clear water is a paradise for marine turtles and mammals. The unique ecosystem of the rain forest houses many flora and fauna species.
Biodiversity is great but not yet completely discovered.

Study and conservation of cetaceans: This project aims to answer the I.W.C (International Whaling Commission) scientific committee call for research in the area and focuses on population identification and abundance estimation as well as breeding stock structure and behaviour assessment of humpback whales. All our results will be used for law reinforcement within the Marine Park of Moheli and Comoros in order to effectively protect and conserve marine mammals.
Study and conservation of marine turtles:
Comoros and especially Moheli are considered as one of the most important breeding grounds for green turtles in the Indian Ocean and a sanctuary for the very rare hawksbill turtle. Moidjio CRCAD is trying to get involved in the conservation of these fantastic creatures. Turtles are protected by national and international laws and the Marine Park of Moheli is supposed to be a sanctuary for them. Poaching is occurring all around Comoros and the situation is more than critical.
Environmental education and English teaching to the local community:
We are going into schools, universities and colleges raising awareness of environmental and ecological issues, encouraging locals to protect and love their environment. We are insistent upon making the English language more accessible and provide free English courses. We believe that if tourism and business develop, the population will need to be able to welcome tourists with acceptable conditions and be capable of selling their products.

    Objectives:
Set up scientific research programmes for the study of Comorian flora and fauna and of the Indian Ocean.
Set up partnerships at regional, national and international levels in order to allow the creation of research networks and ease research results interpretation and diffusion.
To advise and participate to the active conservation of the Comorian and Indian Ocean biodiversity.
To publish our research results in scientific papers.
To welcome and take care of scientific volunteers as well as volunteers from the general public.
To participate in village life by developing joyful activities in form of environmental education and conservation.
To take part in the island’s development by providing English, sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation courses to anybody who wishes to benefit from this training. Courses are given for free and open to everyone from any social and ethnic background without discrimination.
To take part in the safeguarding of Comorian traditional and cultural heritage by opening it to the world and by encouraging the youth to do the same.
