    About this project

betterplace-Team from European Intercultural Forum e. V. is responsible for this project
The volunteering project “Volunteering for the inclusion of young refugees” is partly supported by the European Commission via the funding Programme Youth in Action. The two German volunteers, Kalina (19), and Sarah (24) arrived in Tbilisi respectively beginning of August and beginning of September 2011 for spending there the next 12 months. Because the funding programme covers only partly the travel costs of the volunteers from Germany to Georgia (return tickets), we are fundraising 200 EUR to cover the remaining travel costs.

    General Description of the project
The European Voluntary Service project called “Volunteering for the inclusion of young refugees” consists of a 12-months term of two German volunteers in the Tbilisi based organisation “Youth Association DRONI” (www.droni.org.ge or on facebook Youth Association DRONI). The volunteers, next to actively taking part in the current youth activities of the non-governmental organisation, will create and implement activities from the scratch directed at young Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as for example arts and crafts and photography workshops in order to develop their abilities and potentials for their future life.

    Context of the project
Because of the latest Russian-Georgian conflict that took place in Georgia during the summer 2008, the number of Internaly Displaced People (IDPs) in Georgia has raised up to 220 000 to 250 000 people for a total population of 4,6 million inhabitants. Human Rights groups based in Georgia highlighted the worstening living situations for those very fragile groups of the society while international organisations pointed out the breach of duties from the governmental side, especially concerning Human Rights of the already most excluded ones.

    Objectives
In this context, the project has as main objectives to bring another perspective to the youth refugees that have no access to any kind of non-formal educational activities giving them material for the mind and hope towards the future. The two German volunteers will implement activities with young IDPs in Tbilisi. Both volunteers and IDPs youth will gain self-confidence and self esteem by interacting with each others. Being together and building bridges among very different cultures is the first step for the volunteers and the local youth to become aware of the responsibilities of a citizen in the context of a society with big gaps among social classes. Giving a chance to disadvantaged youth, providing them with tools for getting active and support them grabbing opportunities for their future, this is the foreseen role of the two German volunteers within this project.
