About this project

In 2008 ASAC opened up an After School Activities Center for 150 students from six primary schools and one pre-school in Taiama. The facility is open from 2 pm to 6 pm and is attended daily by 35 children. Children receive a warm meal. We provide supervision of homework, tutoring, in and outdoor games and cultural activities (traditional drumming and music). During the holidays we offer a summer school vacation programme. In 2009 it was joined by 135 children. Locally we employ two teachers and one secretary. Three volunteers cook and provide the children with daily meals. A headteacher from Makeni ensures with fortnightly visits the smooth running of activities. The project is counselled by an advisory board consisting of the headteachers of the participating schools. By now Children’s World is well-established and reputated in the community. Some of our children passed the National Primary School Examination and attend the Junior Secondary School. In addition, the facility is attended daily by about 30 non-registered children. We are seeking funds to pay the annual salary for our sierra leonean staff.
