Help document how the EU rewards dictators for border protection

Berlin, Germany

We want everyone to know what the EU is doing in Africa to keep refugees away. The consequences for the local people are serious.

About this project

The European Union is sealing itself off  –  and is investing billions, so that African states expand their border protection. The website is the collective knowledge about European migration control. It documents agreements and financial compensations, reveals economic interests and new markets for armaments firms looking to sell border control technology and shows how this policy damages African societies. However, the website was last updated in 2017.
This development has continued since then, which we want to show in the database. For the update of we need your support! Help document how the EU rewards African dictators for their border protection and makes them Europe's gatekeepers. The EU is enforcing that the freedom of movement of African citizens be curtailed and that the routes of refugees to safe areas be blocked in order to stop migration to Europe.

Now we want to work with a team of journalists and scientists from Europe and Africa to review the current status of European migration control and feed it into the database. The responsibility for the project is in the hands of taz.die tageszeitung and will now be handed over to the Forschungsgesellschaft Flucht und Migration ("Research Society on Flight and Migration"). The non-profit FFM has been researching and publishing on migration movements at the EU's external borders in the context of social struggles since 1994. Today it also conducts targeted research on European isolationist policies in West Africa. The FFM will continuously update the state of European migration control and its effects and thus provide the knowledge permanently up-to-date.

In addition to the German and English versions of, we also want to offer a French version and thus inform even more people especially in Africa about the consequences of European isolation. To pay for the translation, we need your help!

The update will be accompanied by medico international as well as by Christian Jakob and Simone Schlindwein, who published, based on the research for, the book "Diktatoren als Türsteher Europas. Wie die EU ihre Grenzen nach Afrika verlagert". It met with great international response and will soon be published in English ("Dictators as Gatekeepers for Europe: Outsourcing EU border controls to Africa"). The film was broadcast worldwide in four languages and watched by more than two million people.
But we also need you as part of a committed civil society that helps document how the EU rewards dictators for their border protection. Support us in keeping permanently up-to-date and accessible!
