    Live with Hope Foundation
A project from Live with Hope Foundation in Kapchorwa, Uganda

    About this project

    R. Walker from Live with Hope Foundation is responsible for this project
Female Genital Mutilation is a procedure involving partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is sometimes referred to female circumcision. It is mainly done in the name of culture but it’s a practice which dehumanizes women and clearly lowers their status in the community. It has no benefit at all BUT it’s associated with many health risks.
Kapchorwa District is located in the remote mountains of Uganda where Sabiny people predominantly live. Isolated by geography and poverty, they have been at the center of focus since 1991 because of spear heading FGM/Cutting in disguise of fiercely protecting their culture. This is an environment in which people believe an uncircumcised woman is not fit to gather grain from the granary, let alone be married. It is the same community that still believes that FGM reduces the chances of infidelity by deliberately reducing the woman’s desire for sex. This gospel later spread to other Districts of Bukwo, Amudat, Nakapipirit & Kween. It is done by local women who use locally made knives and sharpened stones. These cause a lot of injury and may facilitate the transmission of infections such as tetanus and HIV/AIDS.
