The military conflict in Yemen, which has been ongoing since 2014, is seriously impacting large sections of the civilian population. The United Nations describes the situation in Yemen as the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. In addition to medical care, there is a lack of food and clean water.
Children in the country are being struck: A large proportion of schools are closed or have reduced operations to a minimum. This is due to the catastrophic security situation and the bankrupt rump state, which stopped paying salaries to teachers long ago. In their distress, many teachers have had to change professions in order to make a living.
As a result, teaching at some schools has been taken over by untrained teachers who misuse the schools to spread war propaganda. Our association wants to counteract this devastating situation with the aid project “Together for a continuation of school operation” in the densely populated districts of Dhawran, AlHada, and Almanar in the governorate of Dhamar (north of the capital Sanaa): by restarting schools and reinstating qualified school and teaching staff. Because we all know: Promoting education is the essence of the future and positive changes in society.
The project consists of the following measures:
-Reconstruction of the partially destroyed schools and classrooms
- Enabling regular school operation by taking over the salary payments for the school and teaching staff
- Restoring the independence and dignity of the teachers and their families through a secure income
- Preventing the radicalization and subsequent recruitment of child soldiers by reinstating trained teaching staff
Hayati Karamati e.V. is a non-profit association that was founded in 2017 under the impression of the acute crisis in Yemen. With local support from the My Life My Dignity organization, our Yemeni partner organization, we want to provide sustainable crisis aid with our school project. We started in the school year 2018/19 with two pilot schools. In the meantime, we have extensive experience in designing and implementing Education in Emergencies (EiE) programs and are in charge of 12 schools in Yemen. These provide refuge and a future for about 8,500 schoolchildren and about 300 teachers!
The more support we receive, the more schools can be made accessible again for the children of Yemen. The fate of many Yemeni children depends on the decision you make after reading this. Please choose to be someone who helps the children of Yemen get access to the education and future they so desperately need.
