Partnership for Participation in Altona- “Papia”- a mentoring project of migrant women – a bridge to a good start for refugee women.
These mentors have successfully overcome the challenges of starting a new life in Hamburg. Newly arrived refugee women need support and guidance for themselves and their children. Thanks to their own experience with migration, these mentors can act as a valuable bridge for women who have had to flee and start all over again in Hamburg.
The project Papia started in January of 2018 and plans, within two years, to teach fifty migrant women to mentor, guide, and support refugee women. In our 100 hour qualification class the future mentors learn, for example:
● how to give an overview of German bureaucracy and forms
● which counseling and information centers support refugee women
● how to organize group activities for refugee women
● how to make new possibilities and contacts accessible to refugee women
The mentors can guide an individual refugee on her first steps in Hamburg, or organize a group activity.
For one-on-one mentoring, the mentors and mentees meet through a matching process, which will be developed and carried out with expert counselors. In monthly group meetings, the mentors will reflect upon their mentoring experiences and will go in depth on relevant topics, such as dealing with trauma. When problems occur, the project manager will support and help through mediation and coaching.
Mentoring as a group-leader:
The mentors will receive help with the planning and execution of their group activities. For example; finding adequate facilities, promoting the program, etc.
What we have already achieved:
20 mentors have already been educated, trained, and empowered. These migrant women want to pass on their strength! Starting in autumn they will be offering individual counseling and companionship. The mentors will create many important bridges to a new life for many refugee women.
