Chorrillos represents one of the poorest districts of Lima, Peru’s capital. The amount of orphanages is highly above average in this area. Besides a third of these do not own basic things like a hot water connection. Furthermore around 40 % of the people living in Chorrillos reside in asylums.
To provide a shelter to the people desperately looking for help, the project “Mama Victoria”- home of hope had been opened in the year 2007. This especially affects women and children who have been oppressed, raped and abused in their own families.. The home “Mama Victoria” is the only sanctuary of Lima that welcomes women together with children! Volunteers working against all odds have been keeping this project alive for many years.
One of the many difficulties in Peru consists in the massive lack of public schools and universities. Most of educational establishments are private, which means they come at high cost. Therefore the little space in public schools is highly competitive. The majority of the kids growing up in Chorrillos have had little or no access to education in their parental home. Heavily traumatized they miss the skill to concentrate or to work hard. This leaves them with no chance at the job market.
To support these children the project “biblioteca infantil” was implemented. It includes a class room, a small library as well as lessons for the children(which nonprofessional volunteers provide).
For the next year, the team of Mama Victoria has decided to expand this educational program. They have set themselves the following ambitious goals to help children escape the vicious cycle of poverty
· Hiring of two professional teachers
· Daily lessons (morning and day)
· One warm meal a day for all children
· Free school supplies
These goals are obtainable with just 5.000 €! Donate now to provide help to one of 50 kids for one year!
