Dear Madam or Sir,

We need your help to continuously offer the (free and anonymous) online service TROUBLED DESIRE. We want to make it accessible worldwide and train future therapist. The main aim of our project is to prevent sexual abuse of children.

Sexual trauma in children and the consumption of child sexual abuse images is a global problem that concerns everyone. Preventive therapeutic interventions for (potential) offenders are a highly important approach to stop this.

Background

“KEIN TÄTER WERDEN” is a project that offers therapeutic help for people who feel sexually attracted to children and early adolescents. Our objective is to prevent sexual abuse as well as the use of child sexual exploitation material. Since 2005, when the work began, our project has expanded into a network of 12 outpatient clinics around Germany that offer preventive treatment. In 2014, an additional project working with adolescents who feel attracted to children was introduced. Our experience shows, that through therapeutic work, problematic behaviour can be reduced significantly thus sexual assault prevented.

International interest and mandate to report

Being one of the first our project attracts international attention from aggrieved parties as well as therapists because we offer therapy for both potential and actual offenders of the Dunkelfeld (literally dark field). Dunkelfeld offenders are those who have not been in contact with the law in any way.

Field report India

In 2015 Prof. Klaus M. Beier started offering his professional expertise in the state of Maharashtra, India. By now, there is a network of therapists, ready to offer help to people with a sexual preference for children and early adolescents. The prevalence for child sexual abuse is at 20 % for India and just under 10 % for Germany. Those cases however, that remain unnoticed in the Dunkelfeld are expected to make up the biggest percentage thus create a striking societal relevance.

Idea and logical consequences

From our experiences in India, a new idea emerged: Profiting from the possibilities of the world wide web, it should be possible to make help available to more people.

Within one year, we developed the online-based programme TROUBLED DESIRE. The low-threshold access to the website provides anonymous diagnostic and therapeutic services to those who feel sexually attracted to children – worldwide.
