About this project

L. Ranft from DESERT FOOD Foundation is responsible for this project
The DESERT FOOD Foundation was established to improve water supply in arid and semi-arid regions to mitigate the severe consequences of increasing desertification.

Nariokotome is a small community in one of the poorest areas of Kenya. The village is located on Lake Turkana, the world's largest permanent desert lake. Just like countless people on the African continent the residents of Nariokotome are fighting for survival on a daily basis. The salty lake water is non-potable and due to the ever-rising temperatures in the desert the concentration of the salt increases steadily.

A pilot project near Lake Turkana was launched in September 2015. An off-grid solar system generates power for a desalination plant. The treated water is supposed to not only for drinking purposes but also to enable farming around the village. There is enough fresh water to cultivate fruit and vegetables.

However, the desire for big watermelons, juicy tomatoes and filling pumpkins often remains unfulfilled. The wonderful project is constantly facing challenges. Due to the extreme climate conditions and the remoteness of the area even small problems can lead to a standstill of the plant and endanger the hoped-for harvest.

The DESERT FOOD Foundation and the people of Nariokotome are dependent on your financial support for urgent repairs and maintenance. The plant requires protection from weather and theft. Additionally, we need to set up a necessary spare parts warehouse.
