Student House "Nuevos Sueños"

The project "Nuevos Sueños":  In July 2022 we purchased a house for the recipients of our Scholarship Program Beca Enrique Schmidt, which enables young, talented Nicaraguans from families with poor financial resources to pursue an academic study at university. The rooms in the student house are for the students who until now had to pay rent for a room near the university or had to travel more than two hours in each direction every day because of the long distance of their home to university.

What do we need?  The first students already moved in in august 2022, but the house is still missing furnishing and various small and bigger reparations, in particular:

Target group: In order to support education equalitiy we prefer to give the scholarships to women and applicants from rural areas, when the same qualification is given. Particularly this group requires a safe and sufficiently equipped accommodation in Managua.
 
Our goal:  With the free accommodation we want to give financially disadvantaged students the same preconditions for their academic career as for students from the middle and upper class.

Background: Most universities in Nicaragua are located in the capital Managua. Young people from other regions are often not able to study, because their families don't have enough money for study materials and housing or they need to put up with long journeys to the university. Until now, a part of our scholaship holders also had to travel several hours a day in order to reach university. Another challenge is the lack of security, electricity and insufficient access to internet connection.
