Ana was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma (a type of blood cancer) earlier this year. She fainted one day at school and was rushed to a local clinic. Doctors began to run tests and only when she was admitted to the cancer hospital in Chisinau were the shocking diagnosis confirmed.
Seventeen-year-old Ana Miron grew up in a small town in central Moldova. Her family come from modest means; her parents are both currently unemployed. The family does their best to get by and live off produce from their garden and their animals.
Living in Moldova often means living with limited resources.
Ana's family couldn't afford her treatment. Standard health insurance doesn’t guarantee treatment in Moldova. It only covers the bare minimum, hospitals provide beds for patients, yet all essentials from bed sheets to medication must be paid for out of one's own pocket. Because of this, families and friends often help one another out and also travel to neighbouring countries to seek out better treatments.
The family sold their calf and all their best furniture, yet this wasn’t enough for the treatment and it means that Ana’s younger sister cannot start vocational training this coming autumn as planned.
Ana was in desperate need of chemotherapy. The bright teenager had an idea: online fundraising! Within just a few weeks many of her friends and family had donated small amounts and Ana was very close to her target. Ana was able to afford the chemotherapy! The first three months of her treatment began in July, all thanks to the enormous support of her friends, family and community.
Ana needs accurate blood tests to establish the effects of the chemotherapy and decide on possible future treatment options. Ana needs 1,500€ to travel to Romania to undergo very important tests to determine how to proceed in her battle against blood cancer. The cancer hospital in Chisinau cannot afford to provide some patients with simple tests nor can the family pay for her to go elsewhere.
After Ana’s own very successful fundraising campaign, Krebsallianz has teamed up with Ana to help fundraise for the next stages of her treatment. The shortage of resources in Moldova often drives patients to neighbouring countries and in Ana’s case it is no different.
Please donate today to help Ana continue with her treatment.
