About this project

On August 19, the author Doğan Akhanlı, a German citizen of Turkish descent, was arrested in Spain. The following day he was released, but the proceedings are continuing and as a result he has to remain in Spain for 40 days.
The 60-year-old writer does not know how he is to finance this 40-day forced stay for himself and his partner, as well as to cover his legal expenses. Help us to provide support for him in this difficult situation!
WE ARE the Armin T. Wegner Gesellschaft e.V. together with the recently established deutsch-türkisch-armenische Freundschaftsgesellschaft (German-Turkish-Armenian Friendship Society), which counts Doğan Akhanlı among its founding members. Through artistic means, both organizations are engaged in promoting understanding among the three nations.

“I am not only a writer. I am also a human rights activist and am working for reconciliation among Turks, Kurds and Armenians,” Akhanlı told the Süddeutscher Zeitung. And in 2010: “To blame is the project behind the founding of this [Turkish] republic: One nation, one race, one religion. (…) The state killed its own citizens, to realize the project of the nation state: in the east the Armenians were exterminated and in the west the Greeks were expelled.”

It was composer Marc Sinan and the Director of the Dresden Symphony, Markus Rindt, who conceived the idea of the dta Freundschaft, after their AGHET Project had been boycotted by Turkey.
The arrest of Doğan Akhanlı was met with enormous outrage, including on the part of the German government. Turkey had obtained an international arrest warrant against him through Interpol. The arrest is most probably politically motivated; Doğan Akhanlı had already been jailed repeatedly in Turkey for his political views, and had been tortured, while his son (then 16 months old) was forced to watch.
Doğan Akhanlı will not allow himself to be silenced under the threat of imprisonment. He wants to continue writing and perhaps in his next work report on what he is currently undergoing. Please help us to prevent a tragic outcome to this affair.
All donations will go to the benefit of Doğan Akhanlı. In the event that the contributions exceed the cost of his legal defense against extradition as well as the cost of his stay in Spain, the funds will provide support for his next publications. (U.
