Gretel Coetzee, founder of YONA, is a woman with big heart and a wonderful vision - to bring about social transformation through music in Namibia.
Youth Orchestras of Namibia (YONA) is a movement with the vision to transform the lives of youth through music. YONA’s mission is to provide an intensive music program that develops a sense of belonging, teaches the importance of teamwork and a strong work ethic, and promotes self-confidence and good citizenship. The overarching principle is to advance children first and music second.
Crescendo South Africa, a non-profit christian organization that established the Crescendo Summer Institute South Africa, supports YONA. From 9 - 16 July 2017 a team of musicians travelled to Windhoek from Germany and Cape Town to support and promote the YONA. Sjoerd Alkema (conductor and pianist), Anna-Marie Alkema (Music educator and Allmusic Business Manager) as well as Leana Alkema (Cellist) together and Micha Makarov (Violinist) gave concerts and master classes, promoting the project in Windhoek and abroad. Musicians in Windhoek joined in the concerts sharing in a festive musical collaboration.
Funds raised will cover the traveling and other project costs and all surplus will be poured into the YONA - an investment into the lives and future of many young people who would otherwise not be able to receive this opportunity.
Thank you for your support! Do follow YONA on Facebook and share the news with friends!
