Circle of Friends for Promoting Christian Social Work in Uganda

Butiru is both a village and a district with approximately 17,000 residents living scattered across numerous small villages in the rural, mountainous region of eastern Uganda. It is situated at an elevation of about 1,100 meters. The land is fertile and green throughout the year. Over the course of 30 years, the Butiru Christian College has grown from modest beginnings to what it is today.

This is the work of Elisabeth Mwaka, who, together with her husband Erasmus, continues to shape the development and character of Butiru and its surrounding areas.

In Germany, Elisabeth receives support primarily from the Freundeskreis Christliche Sozialarbeit (Circle of Friends for Christian Social Work) and various foundations. While the Freundeskreis generates donations for ongoing project work, the involved foundations—particularly the Stiftung Kinder in Afrika (Children in Africa Foundation)—are mainly responsible for the construction of school buildings.

Since 1993, the Freundeskreis has been working locally to ensure that children and young people receive both schooling and vocational training. Over the years, alongside the preschool, primary, and secondary schools, many other projects have developed in and around Butiru.
